Aya Sophia marvel construction
A religious and majestic Turkish religion; it is magnified by the country's population, both Muslim and Christian. After being the largest Orthodox Christian cathedral in 90 years, it became one of the largest Muslim mosques in about five centuries, and became a museum of art since 1934 by political decision. UNESCO considers it to be one of the historical monuments of global cultural wealth.
The name "Ayia Sophia" means "Holy Wisdom" in Greek and was erected at the entrance of the Bosphorus Strait in the European section of Istanbul, Turkey. Its location today is known as the "Sultanahmet District".
Architecture
When Sophia was built, it was, in an architectural sense, the largest Christian church, and evidence of the advanced technical capabilities of the then Byzantine Empire.
Its five-year building, one of the masterpieces of Byzantine art, has a large dome of 55.6 meters in diameter and 32 meters in diameter. It is built on four massive columns of 24.3 meters each. This is in addition to the walls built of marble imported from many countries, decorated with bright golden mosaics and colored stones.
The main building is 82 meters long, 73 meters wide and 55 meters high, with nine doors. Its surface was covered with mosaic stones and the walls, after being converted into a mosque, were decorated with inscriptions by the Ottoman calligraphers. Four Ottoman-style cylindrical minarets were added to it.
History
It was established in 537 by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527-565), whose rule extended from Spain to the Middle East - to be an unparalleled religious edifice in the Christian world, in reference to the power of the Eastern Roman state.
And remained the official church of the Byzantine Christian state and the capital of Constantinople, despite the destruction and burning of it more than once, until the opening of the Ottoman Sultan Mohammed II (known as "Muhammad al-Fateh") city in 1453 changed its name to "Istanbul" and entered this church and prayed the first Friday after Conquest, and make it a large mosque symbolizes the power and control of the Ottoman Empire.
